I was the Art Director on FRIENDS and when my boss John Shaffner and I read the script for this episode, we imagined ourselves in the situation and from there logistically we knew it needed to work…then amusing ourselves, we slightly reduced the logistics to create the ridiculous. I drew up the plans, construction built it, painters painted it, set decorating added their magic, and during the rehearsals we watched as it started taking on a life of its own, so by the time it was shot, the actors had shot the ridiculousness factor through the roof. We’ve all been there. We never thought it would be such an iconic set.
